Happy Memorial Day! As summer officially begins, I’m opening up limited sunset portrait sessions for vacationing families here on Hilton Head.

Sunsets, Sand, and Stunning Shots: Your Guide to Hilton Head Vacation Portraits

Planning a family trip to Hilton Head? You’ve got sunscreen, beach chairs, and maybe a few extra pairs of flip-flops. Now it’s time to think about something a little more lasting: sunset portraits that don’t feel forced and actually make your walls.

I’m Kellie, and I’ve photographed families from Ohio to Ontario (yes, really) right here on Hilton Head’s beaches for over 20 years. If you’re curious about how to make the most of your session — without the stress — here’s everything I’d want you to know.

First Things First: It’s Sunset or Nothing

No shade to the sunrise crowd (well, maybe a little), but I photograph exclusively at sunset — and here’s why:

  • Lighting matters: Morning sun comes up fast and harsh, washing out colors and casting unflattering shadows before you’ve even had coffee.
  • Sky drama: The soft pastels and fiery glow of Hilton Head’s evening sky make for gallery-worthy backdrops.
  • Fewer crowds: Early morning beachgoers are surprisingly plentiful. At sunset, we often have the shoreline to ourselves.

After years of photographing all over the island, I can tell you with confidence: sunset is when Hilton Head shows off.

Best Beaches? These Are My Tried-and-True Spots

Mitchelville Beach

Low tide here is a dream. Large boulders emerge — perfect for framing, balancing, or simply sitting pretty — and the west-facing shoreline means we catch the full golden glow of the day’s last light. This spot has become a client favorite (and mine too) for its calm, unspoiled beauty.

South End of Sea Pines

If you want that “sunset melting into the water” look, this is where it happens — as the sun dips behind Daufuskie Island. It feels like a postcard… except you’re in it.

These aren’t the only places I shoot, but they’re the locations I return to time and again because they deliver — visually, logistically, and atmospherically.

Curious about more public beaches and access points on the island? The Hilton Head Chamber's beach guide is a helpful resource.

Want this location for your family session? I’d love to help you plan it.

What to Wear (Let’s Get Real About It)

Creams and white might sound beachy, but they tend to either glow unnaturally or vanish into the sand.

That’s why I offer pre-session wardrobe guidance — showing you examples from real families I’ve worked with, and helping you build a look that fits your family’s style and the setting.

We’ll talk tones, textures, and how to make sure everyone looks cohesive without being matchy-matchy. (Hint: the key is balance, not uniformity.)

Your Family, But Relaxed — Really

One of the best things about Hilton Head is that people truly let go here. Even the most polished professionals I photograph show up barefoot, relaxed, and ready to lean into the moment.

And that’s the energy I love to capture — natural, unforced, and just elevated enough to feel timeless.

There’s no awkward posing or endless retakes. Just connection, movement, and a little creative direction to make sure everyone looks and feels their best.

Out-of-Towners: I See You

Families visiting from:

  • Ohio (our top visitor state)
  • Pennsylvania
  • New York
  • Georgia

make up the heart of Hilton Head tourism, and I’ve had the joy of photographing so many of you.

Whether it’s your first trip or your fifteenth, we’ll make your portrait session feel like a seamless — and luxurious — part of your vacation. One less thing to worry about. One more thing to look forward to.

See how five families created unforgettable sessions during their Hilton Head vacations in this behind-the-scenes feature.

Let’s Make This the Portrait Session You Brag About

No forced smiles. No chaotic wardrobe planning. No regrets.

Just beautifully framed memories in a location that already means something to you — created by someone who’s been capturing Hilton Head’s families (and sunsets) for years.

Ready to talk dates or get more details? Let’s connect. I can’t wait to hear about your trip — and help you make it unforgettable.
